How to choose a mattress

Most mattress guides tell you to think about firmness, sleeping position, and materials. Few talk about the actual physics of their fill material, because most fill materials don't have an interesting physics story to tell. Why Weight and Buoyancy Are the Real Story

Kapok comes from the seed pods of the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra). Fibre-for-fibre, it's roughly eight times lighter than cotton, and it's naturally buoyant: sailors used it to stuff life jackets before synthetic foams existed, because the hollow fibre traps air and resists compression instead of absorbing weight.

That property is the whole reason kapok is usable as a mattress fill at all. A cotton-filled mattress of comparable loft needs to carry substantially more raw material by weight to hit the same volume, and cotton compacts and flattens with sustained body weight in a way kapok's hollow structure resists. So it's not that "more fill" makes a mattress better; it's that kapok gives you loft and resistance to compression without needing the density (or the synthetic foam) that most "supportive" mattresses rely on to do the same job. Fill quantity isn't the metric that matters here - fibre behavior under load is.

This is also why kapok resists the two things that kill most mattresses early: it doesn't collapse the way loose fibre fill does, and it doesn't retain heat or off-gas the way polyurethane foam does.

What Actually Determines the Right Mattress for You

Sleeping position decides where you need give, not how firm the whole mattress should be.

  • Side sleepers: need cushioning concentrated at the shoulder and hip: the two points carrying the most load, while the rest of the surface stays supportive.
  • Back sleepers: need even, medium-firm resistance along the full spine.
  • Stomach sleepers: need the hips prevented from sinking below the shoulder line, a support problem, not a softness problem.

Firmness and support are not the same axis.

"Organic" is a claim about the cover unless you check the fill. A huge share of mattresses marketed as organic use GOTS-certified cotton only for the outer casing, while the comfort layers underneath remain standard polyurethane foam. Before buying, ask:

  • Is the cotton GOTS-certified, or just "organic" in name?
  • Does the comfort layer contain any polyurethane foam?
  • What is the fill actually made of?

Breathability is a fibre property, not a marketing claim.

  • Hollow, air-trapping fibres — kapok, and to a lesser extent cotton, circulate air through the mattress instead of insulating heat against the body the way closed-cell foams do.
  • This is structural, not cosmetic: a "cooling" quilted cover can't fully offset a heat-retentive foam core underneath it.
