Bedding sizes in the USA, UK, Europe and India
A “king” bed is not one size. It is four different sizes depending on which country made your mattress. These charts put mattresses, flat sheets, fitted sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases side by side so you can order once and get it right.
Step one
Measure the mattress, not the bed frame
Three numbers decide everything that goes on top.
Width
Side to side, across the mattress, with all bedding removed.
Length
Head to foot. This is the number listed first in Indian sizing.
Depth
The mattress height, plus any mattress topper or protector. Fitted sheets fail on depth more often than on width.
Chart 1
Mattress sizes by country
| Mattress type | USA (inches) | UK (metric) | Europe (metric) | India (inches) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single / Twin (Small Single, UK) | 38" x 75" | 75 x 190 cm | 90 x 200 cm | 36" x 75" |
| Double / Twin XL (USA), Single (UK) | 38" x 80" | 90 x 190 cm | 90 x 210 cm | 54" x 75" |
| Queen (Small Double, UK) | 60" x 80" | 120 x 190 cm | 120 x 200 cm | 60" x 78" or 60" x 72" |
| King | 76" x 80" | 150 x 200 cm | 160 x 200 cm | 72" x 78" |
| Full / Double (UK) | 54" x 74" | 135 x 190 cm | 140 x 200 cm | Not standard |
| California King / Super King (UK) | 72" x 84" | 180 x 200 cm | 180 x 200 cm | Not standard |
The trap: a UK king (150 cm ≈ 59 inches wide) is narrower than a US king (76 inches). Ordering “king” sheets from another country is the single most common bedding mistake.

Layering
The order bedding goes on a bed
Get the sequence right and the bed holds its shape all week.
1. Bed skirt
Optional. Hides the frame and storage beneath.
2. Fitted sheet
Sized to mattress depth, so it grips instead of popping off.
3. Flat sheet
Laid face down so the hem shows when folded back over the duvet.
4. Duvet, comforter or dohar
A duvet is an insert inside a washable cover; a comforter is a single quilted piece; a dohar is a light cotton layer, ideal for Indian summers.
Materials
Why size alone won’t fix an uncomfortable bed
A mattress should not be as soft as it looks in advertising. Aim for neutral spinal alignment: too soft and your hips sink, too hard and your neck takes the load. Kapok or ilavam panju mattresses, made from natural silk-cotton tree fibre and traditionally quilted in a cross pattern for even weight distribution, stay supportive without trapping heat the way foam does.
For sheets, long-staple organic cotton in single-ply yarn is what actually makes a sheet feel cool and last through hundreds of washes — thread count alone is a weak signal. Pair it with hypoallergenic, thermo-regulating pillows and the bed works in every season.
Bedding size questions, answered
What size bed sheet should I buy if my mattress is an odd size?
Always size up to the next standard size. A slightly large flat sheet tucks in cleanly, and a fitted sheet with a deeper pocket still grips. A sheet that is even an inch short will never sit right, and will keep pulling off the corners.
How do I measure my mattress correctly?
Strip the bed first. Measure the width side to side, the length head to foot, and the depth from the base of the mattress to the top surface — including any topper or protector you use every day.
How much bigger should a duvet cover be than the duvet?
Match the cover to the duvet size, or go up to about 5 cm larger. A cover that is too tight compresses the filling and flattens the loft; one that is far too large lets the duvet shift and bunch inside.
Can duvet covers open from both ends?
Most open at one end, usually with buttons or a hidden zip along the foot. Two-way openings exist and make inserting the duvet easier, but they are not the standard.
In an Indian king mattress listed as 78 x 72 inches, which number is the length?
78 inches is the length. Indian sizing lists length first, then width — the reverse of US listings, where width comes first.
A single flat sheet in India is listed as 90 x 60 inches — which is the length?
90 inches is the length and 60 inches is the width, following the same length-first convention.
Why do Indian pillowcases not fit US pillows?
The Indian standard pillow is 18 x 28 inches, while a US standard pillow is 20 x 26 inches. The Indian case is narrower and longer, so a US pillow will not slide in properly.
